Greetings! My name is Julian Escalante and I am the founder and principal tutor of Covalent Minds Chemistry Tutoring. I am a fourth-year Science Education with Grades 7-12 certification major at Texas A&M International University. As of August 2020, I am state-certified by the Texas Education Agency to teach biology, chemistry, physics, earth and space science in any public middle or high school in Texas
I am very passionate about chemistry and chemical education. I aspire to teach chemistry at the high school level when I graduate next year in December. I have successfully completed General Chemistry I & II, Organic Chemistry I & II, Biochemistry I, Analytical Chemistry, and Medicinal Biochemistry at Texas A&M International University in preparation for this goal. As part of my Educator Preparation Program, I have also completed coursework in curriculum & instruction and more than 100 hours in clinical and field experiences (both observing and teaching at local public schools).
Currently, I work as a general and organic chemistry teaching assistant for TAMIU's Department of Biology & Chemistry as part of the ADVancing the Instruction of Science Educators (ADVISE) Program, having held this position since June of 2019. As a teaching assistant, I have helped professors with instructional delivery and course design, including delivering university lectures when needed; designed and delivered weekly review sessions aimed at helping students prepare for their chemistry exams; created and deployed lessons, videos, study guides, and assessments; and encouraged and motivated students in their triumphs and setbacks in their chemical education. I have TA'd General Chemistry I for four semesters (Summer I 2019, Fall 2019, Summer II 2020, Fall 2020); General Chemistry II for three semesters (Summer II 2019, Summer II 2020, Spring 2021); and Organic Chemistry II for one semester (Spring 2020).
In my spare time, I enjoy reading the news and studying politics; watching reality competition shows (any Survivor or Big Brother fans?); listening to the music of Madonna, Gloria Trevi, Taylor Swift & Dua Lipa; and spending quality time my younger sister and my friends. I also read organic chemistry textbooks for fun—which may sound pretty weird—but I am just fascinated with the subject! I hope to one day pursue a graduate degree in chemistry so I can teach organic chemistry at TAMIU.
I founded Covalent Minds Chemistry Tutoring as a means of providing students with additional one-on-one instruction and assistance in their chemical education. Helping other students succeed in the chemical sciences is the utmost passion of mine; the joy I receive when I witness students experience those "aha" moments and master the wonderful world of chemistry is a priceless and fulfilling feat. As of December 2020, I have tutored students in general, organic, and MCAT chemistry.
